My Students

Do you remember a favorite song that was playing during a memorable moment in your life? Playing music is magical because it appeals to everyone's emotions. Music and educational apps stored in an iPod touch will have a positive effect on reading and math skills.

My second grade students attend a small high poverty school in rural West Virginia.

Many families have limited access to technology and educational materials and struggle to provide enriching activities after school. Many of the students do not even have access to a computer at home. However, our parents are very supportive of the school's efforts to enhance their child's education. I can't wait to see the excitement on the student's faces when they "play" with this new educational device.

My Project

Imagine a teacher being able to have wonderful, classroom music organized in a playlist on an iPod touch. No more fumbling for the right CD while the students are waiting. My students absolutely love singing as much as I do. Listening to up beat songs make learning new ideas feel just like playing a game. Children can also record their own reading onto the iPod touch and then excitedly listen to themselves in order to improve reading skills. This electronic gadget will also provide reading disabled students with a multi-sensory tool. Additionally, there is a wide variety of multi-media material that instantly projects to the students using the iTunes store. Podcasts and television shows like the science channel allow for even more content to be delivered.

I deeply care about my students and want to provide enriching educational experiences for them in spite of limited funds.

If schools want to reach today's learners, they can't ignore it," said Don Knezek, chief executive of the International Society for Technology in Education. An iPod touch will improve the student's literacy skills, transform music in the classroom, and engage students to reach a higher potential.
