Butterfly Garden

My students need hands on experience to understand the plant/butterfly life cycles including garden tools, gloves live butterfly kits, and display cages.

My Students

Did you see that-A butterfly just came out of that chrysalis! The transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly is worth watching!Students can learn the life cycle of a plant or a butterfly from looking at pictures.Imagine the pride they will have from growing their own butterfly garden.

I have 18 8-10 yr old students.

They come from all walks of life, but many are from a low socio-economic background. These students have little or no experience with gardens, and none of them have ever seen the life cycle of a butterfly in real life. What they lack in means, however, they make for with enthusiasm. This is one of the most energetic classes I have ever had. They are eager and willing to learn. Hands on experience is exactly what they need to fulfill their thirst for knowledge. Florida is the perfect place for a beautiful school butterfly garden. The monarchs are plentiful so even after our class butterflies have flown away, this garden will keep on giving for years to come to many future classes. With the energy these students have, they will be dedicated to caring for the garden and the butterflies it brings.

My Project

We will start the year with the life cycle of a butterfly. Using the live caterpillars, the students will be able to see this instead of just reading about it. They will create their own books with illustrations of what they have seen. The butterflies will be kept for the later stages of the project. The students will care for them, making sure they are fed daily. Then we will begin the mini gardens which is the first step in ensuring the butterflies return to us. Once the gardens are grown and moved outdoors, the butterflies will be released. Many will fly away, but some will lay eggs in our garden. The students will then be able to watch the life cycle again as it occurs in nature. The garden will remain for future classes. With the abundance of monarchs in our area, students in future years will get to experience the joy of the butterfly life cycle.

This project will help my students become environmentally aware through the creation of our own compost for the garden.

They will learn to care about animals through the raising of their very own butterflies. Finally, they will end this project with a sense of pride in themselves when they look at the garden they created with their own hands. Knowledge of science, environmental responsibility, love of animals, and pride in themselves . . . what more could a teacher ask for in his/her students?
