Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Strengthen our future! Many students in this country face a major obstacle; lack of understanding the English language. Let us work together to bridge that gap and expand our students knowledge in order for them to read, write and succeed!

Our community consists of low-socioeconomic children coming from unfortunate circumstances.

However they thrive to learn and need additional engaging activities to enhance their learning. Our school is a public school servicing students from grades K-5 in the New York City public school system. We predominantly service children who are reading below grade level and struggling with writing.

My Project

After much research we have concluded that the most effective way to teach English to students who do not speak the language is to go "back to basics." Children thrive with visual aides and Sesame Street and Electric Company have the means in their programs to "teach through fun!" The alphabet videos along with the phonics from the Electric Company videos will enhance our students to learn letters, form words and eventually read and write. The use of technology is a critical component in teaching elementary students to read and write. The students will be able to watch the videos based on their needs and the teachers will then comprise a lesson surrounding the video. For example, teaching the children how to blend to form a word can be visually seen on Electric Company and then students can write the blended words in sentences create flash cards and add these words to their word wall. This basic listen will enhance the success of our children.

The students at "my school" struggle with daily societal issues.

Our community is low socio-economic but filled with children who thrive and crave learning. My concern is that they come from homes where English is a second language therefore they are at a disadvantage upon entering the New York City public school system. We are working very hard to introduce and sustain their learning of the English language through programs and committees; which include offering teaching English to the parents.
