My Students

How many times have we sat in English class and listened to the teacher or professor explain the "true meaning" of a book, only to respond with a blank stare? This book, written by an English professor, demystifies literature by helping students understand the hidden rules of comprehending literature.

We are a very diverse school with the following student demographics: 50.7% African American, 24.4% Hispanic, 20.5% White, and 4.5% Asian.

Of the students in our school, 71.3% are Economically Disadvantaged, which means we are a HIGH POVERTY school. Also, we are a school comprised of immigrants and students who face the challenged of intergenerational poverty. In addition to the daily challenges life presents to us, we are eager to learn and go to college or get technical training. My students are looking for a chance, and in order to provide them educational opportunities, we need resources. Books, which are taken for granted in more affluent schools, are desperately needed, and I have created this project to obtain not just a book but a TOOL to help my students foster a lifelong understanding and appreciation of literature.

My Project

Just like a key to a lock, this book helps students understand the universal themes and concepts contained in all works of literature. By remembering these "rules," students will be able to better understand thematic concepts and to trace patterns and commonalities among works of literature. By recognizing themes and patterns, students will develop critical thinking skills that will help them be successful in their future endeavors- whether in college or the workplace. By truly understanding the meaning of literature, students will make a personal connection with the text and be able to integrate the lessons learned into other academic subjects and their overall cultural literacy.

Please help me demystify literature by helping students better comprehend classic and contemporary literature.

By reading this book, students will understand the patterns and universal rules of literature so they can truly be engaged by and interact with the text. By eliminating the frustration caused by a lack of comprehension, students will become more fluent readers in all subject areas. This book will help increase literacy in all content areas! Please help promote literacy! :)
