Literacy Bags for Kindergarten Reading Fun

My students need books and educational activities to create literacy bags that they can take home and share with their families.

My Students

One of my most precious memories from being little was curling up on the sofa with my mom and my big brother and reading stories at bedtime. I grew to love reading and books because of that special routine that we had and I can still remember the stories that we loved best.

I teach two half-day Kindergarten sessions with a total of about 50 students who come from a variety of backgrounds.

Some of my students have many books at their fingertips once they leave school, yet others do not have that luxury. About 1/3 of my students are learning English as a second language and they are all working hard to become readers. Since my students only have 2 hours and 20 minutes at school due to budget cuts which resulted in the loss of full day Kindergarten, I want them to have access to books and educational activities at home so they can share in the joy of learning with their families like I did.

My Project

With the materials that I have requested, I will be able to create Literacy Bags that will include several books with a related theme in addition to a game and other educational activities that students can bring home and enjoy with their families. For students who do not have books of their own, these Literacy Bags with fun and educational themes such as bugs, colors, transportation, seasons and families will be a fantastic way to inspire them to love reading and will encourage family involvement (which has a positive affect on student achievement!). Instead of watching TV or playing video games, they can spend time reading and playing educational games with family members they love. Additionally, sharing in the act of reading and listening to stories at home will strengthen their literacy skills and improve attention span. The inclusion of games and other activities will provide opportunities to practice other subjects such as math too!

Inspiring a love for reading when children are young is extremely important so they continue to practice and strengthen their skills outside of school.

Children become successful readers by practicing often and we just don't have enough time during our short school day. Providing the materials to families and children who don't have them at home will give students more time to engage in educational activities and improve their skills.
