Inquiry-Based Field Biology: A Biological Survey Experience

My students need nets to collect and classify vertebrates and invertebrates from shallow streams less than 1.5 meters deep, and a stereo microscope.

My Students

Every high school teacher has heard the question, "When am I ever going to use this stuff?" Moving biology lessons out into the field increases student interest and motivation, translating into greater performance in the classroom. City-based students observe stream-dwelling organisms in the wild.

Our students represent a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and races.

Approximately 60% are Caucasian, 30% Native American, and 10% Black, Hispanic and Asian. 80% of the students are classified as impoverished, and receive meals free of charge or at a reduced cost. Approximately 67% of our incoming freshmen will graduate in 4 years. The school’s extracurricular activities include speech/debate, robotics team, athletics, marching band, National Forensics League, drama club, photography club, and National Honor Society, as well as others. Interest in a biology-based extracurricular club has been phenomenal. The ability to generate greater interest and enthusiasm in the life sciences is the primary benefit of this program. A secondary benefit is seeing students get excited about being physically and intellectually active outdoors instead of spending the weekend inside.

My Project

The teachers in the biology department have started a Biological Survey Team at school as a means of getting students out of the city and into a wooded, cross-timbers setting where they can experience the natural world around them. We are currently surveying a 2,000 acre site with a 150 acre lake, a running stream, and numerous natural springs. Materials requested will allow for students to collect aquatic invertebrates and fish for study and classification. The ability to collect a specimen first-hand, and use a dichotomous key to identify it, make the experience much more memorable than working solely from a textbook. The requested dissecting microscope will allow students to observe the finer, more delicate features which often separate one species from another. Nearly 2/3 of the incoming freshmen indicated that they had never used a microscope!

Materials from this grant will allow students to gain first-hand experience participating in an actual biological survey.

They will demonstrate proficiency using the tools commonly associated with biological sampling. The students are excited about this project. They give up their Saturdays and Sundays one weekend each month, year-round, to leave the school at 5:30 a.m. for a full-day field trip.
