My Students

My students come from extremely difficult situations and often are lacking the financial resources and home support necessary in providing school supplies. It is very difficult to conduct class when students do not have the resources they need and deserve to do their work.

My students are amazing.

They're creative, caring, and full of fire. They attend a financially impaired high school that has recently come off of the persistently dangerous list. Due to past conflicts in the school, our students often have a stigma attached to them. Many of them have had to deal with issues outside of school that I could not fathom having to deal with. As a result, it takes a lot of energy and compassion to keep them engaged. Often, they do not have resources for school supplies, so each day begins with scrounging up materials for them (pencils, markers, pens, paper, etc.). This year, I am hoping to optimize learning time and student engagement by always having resources for my students in the classroom. This involves tapping into their interests with the literature I select and making sure they have the supplies they need. Many students have gone through our school without ever having a non-textbook in their hands; I refuse to let this happen to my students.

My Project

I have requested binders for all of my students in order to keep them organized. They will use their binders for notes, handouts, returned tests and quizzes, and journal entries. I have requested paper to go in the binders as well. I have also requested 15 copies of "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf." I selected this book because I can teach it in all of my classes. We have 15 copies at school that I can take out, so I requested enough to have a full classroom set. In addition to teaching English, I also teach Creative Writing and run a slam poetry team and poetry club after school. This book will engage my students interests, give them a platform to practice their creative performance, and allow for the discussion of poetic devices. Finally, I selected the book "Hip-Hop and the Classics." This book is a fantastic teacher's guide for comparing hip-hop music and classic poetry. It will be very relatable and engaging for my students.

I have selected "For Colored Girls" with the goal of empowering my female students and encouraging my male students to cultivate a respect for women.

I feel this book is powerful and engaging and will be a platform for discussions and positive change in an environment in which respect for women is unfortunately lacking. My intention with "Hip Hop and the Classics" is also to ground foreign poetic concepts in the music that they love and can relate to. Both of these books are powerful tools.
