Stuck on Science!

My students need some hands-on science materials including a prism, a rock detective bucket, and Water Plant Adaptations Exploration Kit in order to perform experiments, to explain what happens in the world around them and discover the beauty of science.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the excitement you experienced as a child when you were able to make a hypothesis, perform an experiment and prove your guess was correct? This is the learning and excitement I'd like to provide to my students when teaching science.

My students are bright, curious and love science.

They especially like hands-on activities and experiments, because they can apply what they've read and enjoy working as a team trying to figure out something they can't just yet understand. My school district is in a high poverty area where we cannot ask parents for donations, but we also have no funds available for science. Our science lessons are limited to books borrowed from the library, photocopied handouts by me, or outdated streaming videos which I download from the Internet. During my rock and light unit I borrow materials from other teachers or asked students to bring items they may have at home. I recently purchased flashlights from the dollar store for our light experiments, but I wasn't successful in making my own prisms. My students have a difficult time understanding reflection, refraction, and also the rock cycle; due to the fact that we lack expensive materials that would aid their visual and hands-on science experience.

My Project

Acquiring prisms to refract light will provide my students with an unforgettable learning experience that will provide a foundation for other higher level learning experiences in higher grade levels. Using the various types of rocks, touching them, looking closely at them, and recreating the rock cycle using these sample rocks will give my students a deeper understanding of this process. If we have our own classroom materials then we can perform experiments on the rocks, such as watching the reaction vinegar might have on a certain type of rock, without worrying that we will harm borrowed materials. My students also need to read about science. Weekly Reader is a valuable source of current information and provides exposure to science photos and vocabulary. Finally the plant adaptation kit will provide a twofold experience in pollution education and plant science. All of the above are part of required third grade standards for our state.

Although my students are used to my low budget science experiments, their engagement and learning would increase if we had more precise, scientific materials to fit our science curriculum.

Making a donation to this project is impacting much more than a science lesson, much more than hands-on learning, it will fuel their imagination and it will provide an unforgettable experience that they'll carry with them forever. With your donation you are impacting many lives and inspiring future scientists!
