Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

By painting small sections each, our students work together & achieve a huge enlargement of a famous painting.

Our students are from diverse backgrounds.

50% of the students are on free & reduced lunch, so paying art fees is very difficult for them, they often volunteer to raise funds instead. Our other 50% is mainly middle class. We are a charter public school with no sports or band, so art is one of the students' main outlet for creative expression.

My Project

Acrylic paints is one of the supplies that is too expensive to buy with the basic budget. However, to make permanent art displays for our cafeteria acrylic paints are a must. My students need acrylic paint in various colors so that they can paint a huge enlargement of Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Memory" to brighten our cafeteria. Acrylic colors will not fade or run and will last for many years. I laminate the sections painted by the students so that the paintings are protected from other students touching the artwork.

Students are so proud that their work is what brightens our otherwise 'hospital-like-drab' cafeteria.

With this project, the students learn to work as a team, each uniquely painting a small section of the overall large reproduction - making the enlargement an original artwork. These enlargements will be displayed for several years, with students' names typed in an explanation letter beside the painting.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
