Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle and are not reading on grade level. A listening center would expose them to a variety of reading expressions and fluency. Students would also be able to self-assess by voice recording their own reading.

Our school is considered a Title One school.

We receive federal funding, but unfortunately that funding is extremely limited; 98% of our student population is on free and reduced meal plans. Often the only meals some of our students receive each day comes from our school cafeteria. These students perform significantly below the average and we are doing everything we can to change that.

My Project

A table and chairs and an auditory device with headphones will allow my students to listen to stories that are individually leveled for learning. Listening to a story offers an example for students of how fluent reading should sound. Also, hearing the words read to them that they may otherwise not be familiar with will assist them in word recognition. Not only can they listen to a story, but they will also have the capability to record their own voices and listen back to self-assess personal fluency levels. A listening center is a very important tool in early literacy.

My 3rd graders desperately need this remediation tool in order to improve reading levels.

We are implementing a new balanced literacy program in our school this year and our classroom is in need of the requested materials. My students deserve the best I can give them and unfortunately the budget cuts and and payroll freezes have prevented me from doing so this year. These requested materials would help my students reach reading achievement goals.
