This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reluctant readers need books that will hook them into reading. I teach 10th grade English in a high-need community. My students do not have the same reading skills or resources as their peers in more affluent communities.

Many of my students are behind grade level in reading.

They have also had bad experiences with reading and do not like to pick up a book. Some students are afraid of reading and others just can't find a book that fits them. When students are already behind and won't read, they only fall farther behind. These students are lacking the essential literacy skills they need to be successful in college and beyond.

My Project

To help my reluctant readers learn to love reading and gain better reading skills, I want to provide them with books they will enjoy and that they are capable of reading. When students find they can read a book, they will be more likely to continue reading. The practice they will get will improve their reading skills and make them college bound students. The books I am requesting are appropriate for reluctant readers. The topics are for high school aged students, but the reading levels are lower and more accessible. Students will finally be able to independently read a book about an interesting topic!

By connecting kids with books they like now, my students will become independent, life-long readers!
