Award-Winning Literature for College-Level Reading in Class!

My students need a selection of 35 Pulitzer and Man Booker Prize-winning novels to read and analyze high-quality literature in the classroom and prepare for college.

My Students

"Is our new reading assignment a book by some old, dead guy?" My students often dread reading literature that, while worthy of praise and study, often does not interest them, relate to their lives, or inspire them to continue reading. With current, award-winning novels, we can help change that!

I teach a very diverse group of students at a rural public high school in Kentucky.

My high school is very racially and socioeconomically diverse and has a very high poverty rate. Many of my students are very capable readers, who are looking for a challenge and want to be as prepared as possible for college. However, these students often come from homes where literacy is not a focus or from families who do not have the financial ability to purchase books and the responsibility falls on my shoulders to help students find a book. I often purchase books for individual students in order to encourage reading, but I am unable to reach all of my students this way due to the financial burden it places on me. With an expanded classroom library, I will be able to supply more books to more students in need and they will find the challenge they are seeking in a wide variety of award-winning literature.

My Project

With a large selection of current, prize-winning literature, I will be able to expose my students to college-level reading that will challenge them to think critically, but also show them that "college-level" doesn't have to mean "old, dead, and boring authors." This selection of texts will allow my classes to complete a contemporary novel analysis individually and it will also expand the choices my students have when it comes to out-of-class reading.

Too often, students are forced to read canonical literature that, while worthy of study, tends to harm students' love of reading rather than encouraging it.

By providing students with a wide variety of current, prize-winning novels, we can help my students find quality literature they they find interesting and explore it through critical and analytical writing.
