This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine yourself sitting in a classroom and you feel like everyone around you is reading well except you. Research proves that students who leave elementary school not reading fluently will continue to struggle and are at-risk to not graduate from high school.

I am a 5th grade teacher in a high poverty school in North Carolina.

This year I will be piloting a special reading program in my classroom aimed at improving reading levels of students who have been identified as being 2 or more years below grade level. My goal is to dramatically improve their self-confidence in their own reading therefore increasing their desire to want to read more. Many of my students do not come to school with the background knowledge (experiences and vocabulary development) that build strong readers, nor do they have the support at home (someone to read with). Reading is more than calling words, it is decoding, making connections to the text, asking questions, predicting and much more. Dependent readers-students who struggle with decoding and fluency, have difficulty moving to the comprehension stage of reading.

My Project

I am requesting Digital Voice Recorders for my students to read into and play back. They will be able to build their fluency (words per minute-errors=fluency) as they read into the voice recorders. The goal is for them to practice on familiar texts, reading them over several times. After they read into the digital voice recorder, they can play back and listen to their reading to judge for themselves if they are fluent. By the time a struggling reader reaches 5th grade, he or she is embarrassed to read out loud in class or with a partner, therefore putting him or her further behind because they let others read for them. Having digital voice recorders will be be a fun and exciting way for them to practice reading aloud therefore building their fluency. Once fluency is mastered, then we can begin building comprehension. The digital voice recorders are small enough, they can be sent home for students to use to practice.

Learning to read is best done by READING.

Students who lack the ability to read fluently must practice daily. Using digital voice recorders will allow a student to practice in a fun way. Evidence shows that children who do not read by third grade often fail to catch up and are more likely to drop out of school, take drugs, or go to prison. Which in turn affects our society as a whole. You can make a difference in the life of a child, and OUR world. Thank You for your consideration!
