Edgy Books to Ignite a Passion for Reading among My Students

My students need a classroom set of 32 copies of Ellen Hopkins' "Crank" and "Glass", edgy novels that capture the attention of high school students and inspire them to continue reading.

My Students

While most novels chosen by school districts and English departments are worthy of study, many of those novels carry with them an unintended consequence: the destruction of a student's budding passion for reading. Accessible and interesting texts are essential to fostering a love for reading.

I teach a very diverse group of students at a rural public high school in Kentucky.

My high school is racially and socioeconomically diverse and has a very high poverty rate. Many of my students are very reluctant readers, and solving this problem typically involves suggesting books that appeal to their interests and backgrounds. While I have been very successful at recommending and providing books for my students to read for out-of-class reading assignments, some of the novels provided by my department are completely irrelevant to my students, thus making our study of such texts painful for them. With interesting, edgy, and relevant books, I will be able to grab my students' attention and use that interest level to teach them more effectively.

My Project

Ellen Hopkins' books "Crank" and "Glass" follow the story of Kristina, an ideal 17 year old student who is introduced to drugs and watches her life fall apart as a result. According to the publisher, "Hopkins writes in free-verse poems that paint painfully sharp images of Kristina/Bree and those around her, detailing how powerful the "monster" can be. The poems are masterpieces of word, shape, and pacing, compelling readers on to the next chapter in Kristina's spiraling world." This combination of engaging subject matter, skilled writing, and unique form results in these two books being highly accessible to students and easy to incorporate into classroom studies of literature. Students can learn a great deal from these novels, and they will enjoy every moment of both books!

Your donations will help to provide edgy, interesting, and relevant books for my students to study as a class.

Students will learn when studying a novel as a class, but students will be far more engaged and benefit far more when the novel being studied is engaging and meaningful to their lives. Please help me achieve my goal of not only effectively teaching my students how to think and write critically about literature, but also to enjoy literature and continue to read in the future.
