My Students

Writing about his trip to the zoo in a daily journal, or preparing a letter to send grandma are exciting activities for the typical second grader. For Deaf children however, English must be strategically learned as a second language, and writing even a simple sentence can be overwhelming.

I am the Deaf Education Teacher for the entire district.

I spend the majority of my day in a self-contained elementary classroom. My students each have a profound hearing loss, use Sign Language to communicate, and range from Kindergarten to fifth grade.

My Project

I would like to go above and beyond the typical writing center and inspire my students with a "Classroom Community Post Office." I've managed to supply the basics: various notebooks, colored paper, colored pencils, glitter pens, special crayons & markers, stickers, rubber stamps, and stencils. However, I would be so appreciative of support transforming the center into an actual Post Office. I know that the fully functioning mailbox, student mail center, and letter writing kit will truly bring it to life. The classroom art organizer will make colored papers and media better accessible. The students earn plastic coins for behavior and academic excellence throughout the week. The cash register will be used to incorporate math skills in the center by allowing the students to purchase special supplies and stamps with the money they have earned.

A "Classroom Community Post Office" will help motivate some very special students to improve their writing skills, a necessity for lifelong communication in our "hearing world." Thank you so much for considering our classroom!
