Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 21st century learner watches movies instead of reading books. I want to inspire students to do both. So many movies were books before they made it to the big screen. A literature and film study will generate and interest in reading the book before watching the movie!

I teach 4th grade in a high poverty school.

They have parents who love and care for them, but are working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. They have support at home, but not help. Education is important, but not all parents have the time, resources, or education to help their children. My students work hard, and want to make a better life for themselves. They know that education is the key.

My Project

These books will be used for a literature and film study. Many students have not had access to great children's literature. They watch movies, but they are not interested in reading. I hope to change that by challenging them to read the book before they watch the film. It can be exciting to compare and contrast literature and film. I want to spark that kind of desire in young readers!

This project will inspire students to read.

They will see that reading is enjoyable; that it can be something they WANT to do, not HAVE to do. They will be excited about reading, and see a purpose for it beyond what they are required to do at school.
