This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Vroom....I can teach the formula: "distance equals rate times time," but how much better to build it, race it, and compare results? And-- how about filming a "photo finish?" Students love cars and I want them to get a chance to build a small racing version of teaching math to them.

Our students have had limited experiences in building and running experiments.

Their parents are generally too busy holding down two or three jobs (if they're lucky to have them) to be able to help their students at home or take them to educational activities. Instead, our students need school to introduce them to new opportunities and potential careers. This is my joy and my challenge.

My Project

My students need to learn important math and science concepts hands-on through building, testing, racing, and recording by camera these model cars. I can see my students working in structures groups to build these cars. We'll race them and make movies of the race. Then we can analyze the data, learning about the important concepts of physics, math formulas, and even slopes. After we really get comfortable, I will encourage students to personalize their cars, change their designs, and then race again. I can't wait to see what students come up with.

Most kids play video games, but I want my students to create a real (albeit miniature) road race with materials they have learned to use and with math tools to analyze the results.
