Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what is was like the first time you heard a story that you instantly fell in love with and wanted to be read to you over and over again? Welcome to being five-years old again in a kindergarten classroom!

I work in a high-need school with at-risk children in New York City.

Unfortunately, many of my students do not walk in with prior-knowledge of classic fairly tale stories, such as The Little Red Hen, the Three Little Kittens and so on. I have noticed that when I first introduce my kindergarten children to these classic stories they crave more and subsequently want to hear them over and over again. My early childhood education has taught me how significant it is to have children hear rhythmic, repetitive language in stories. This in turn helps them learn how to read fluently.

My Project

I would like to use these resources in my listening center since I greatly lack a variety of read-along books that the kindergarten children can listen to and enjoy. I would like to use my listening centers with these classic stories to help teach the kindergarten students how print carries a message. The books chosen in this grant contain rhythmic language and lots of repetition which will make it easy for kindergarten children to follow along and practice reading with appropriate pacing, intonation, and expression.

I believe your generosity will not only help the kindergarten children develop an understanding of themselves as readers, but foster a love for reading that will last a lifetime.
