Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how hard it was to pay attention in grade school? Always bored and no motivation to learn? and then you found the teacher that sparked your imagination! Art throughout the curriculum is what drives students in this classroom.

My students live in a lower socioeconomic inner city neighborhood that has a mobility rate approaching 30%.

School is their safe haven. Many are being raised by aunts, uncles, grandparents, and foster parents and move frequently. These children face many challenges before they reach the classroom door. Making a connection with them on a personal level is a must in order for them to be successful in the classroom.

My Project

I am asking for personal sketch books for my children to be inspired to learn. Being an aspiring artist myself, I try to use art to motivate students, but my resources are limited. Imagine coming to school and finding a hardbound sketch book to call your very own. I use these sketch books to motivate. Students will use these sketch books to make illustrations during lessons in science and math and to make sketches in history, art, and reading. They earn guided sketch time at the end of the day. This really motivates the students to learn. They pay attention and are always asking for "a sketch lesson." It is amazing to see students who struggle academically come to life through simple drawing. Many students who didn't think they could draw come to realize that they can do anything they practice.

I started using art to inspire years ago.

At first we used scrap paper, then we tried homemade books, and last year we received a one time art grant to purchase hard cover sketch books. What a difference it made! Watching students leave the last day of school with their sketch books in hand was amazing. They were so proud of them. With the funding this year we will be lucky to get pencils. Even home made sketch books are out of the question. Make a kid smile and learn!
