That's Not a Math Book!: Picture Books for Math Instruction

My students need 26 picture books that highlight mathematical concepts.

My Students

Can you find the sum of the interior angles of polygons? It's not easy!! This is just one of the many challenging concepts that 5th grade students face in math. Picture books will help them understand these concepts.

My students are rich with life experience.

They are critical thinkers who need opportunities to connect what they already know to the larger world. They are 5th graders who face a critical point in their education - the point where they decide to take ownership of their own learning and future. My students are minorities, they live in poverty, receive free/reduced lunch, and attend their public, neighborhood school. They are brilliant.

My Project

With these picture and story books, math lessons will include read-alouds and shared reading opportunities that involve the day's mathematical concepts. Each of the books involves mathematical concepts or situations that will further illuminate the 5th grade content. Our classroom discussions of mathematical concepts will become richer with the stories provided in the books. Because of the stories, the students and I will have a shared language to discuss and engage the concept. Additionally, concepts that once seemed impossible, dull, or unimaginable, will become real and interesting when presented in story form. Fractions, division, and ratios are much less daunting in terms of gator pie, ducks, and Jumanji! Through these books, students will learn that they are mathematicians who can solve the problems around them. The books will also provide the opportunity for students to further develop their literacy skills.

Thank you so much for considering this project.

Your support will mean that hundreds of students will experience math in a new and engaging way. This engagement is the key ingredient that allows students to take ownership of their learning and their lives!
