My Students

James T. Ellison wrote that "The real death of America will come when everyone is alike."

No two days are ever the same.

With a room filled with students who are identified as at-risk, my life is filled with surprises, creative angles, intuitive responses - nothing linear, nothing predictable, nothing mundane. Sophomore students in my class meet indicators that put them at-risk of not completing high school with their grade. These young people are bright, articulate, and promising. They have a myriad of challenges and a chronic history of not fitting the traditional mold, not able to function fully under some of the confines of a conventional curriculum and schedule.

My Project

A Truth, with a capital T, that I have witnessed with this group of students is that they are predominantly right-brainers who respond favorably to artistic, conceptual challenges. Instead of the standard, typical write a book report assignment, I have created an I-Search Project that meets state standards while affording students the opportunity to discover, to explore, to pursue their interests. Students are challenged to choose a topic, to design their own research questions, to follow leads, to experience a satisfying journey of invention. And then...they share their new found knowledge with their peers. No two projects will be the same just as no two students are the same. Students will have MacBooks to transform information into digital presentations using tools such as podcasts, slideshows, GarageBand, etc. The 4 digital cameras I am requesting will help them complete these projects.

These amazing young people are NOT conformists.

They are transformers. Given a chance, they can teach us to truly appreciate that one size does not fit all. The I-search project allows for diversity - a celebration. Let's give our students technology tools to engage them. When they have positive learning experiences, opportunities to direct their own learning, and are challenged to experiment instead of rely passively on prescribed instructions, they have a purpose worth going the distance for.
