My Students

Unfortunately, obesity in young adults and children is increasing. Many over weight children are exhibiting health problems that were once only adult concerns. Obese children can and do, lead to obesity as adults.

I teach Physical Education at a high poverty middle school.

My students think physical activity is basketball, text messaging and video games. I see every student in the school during the day. Due to budget issues, classes such as mine are the last to be funded by the district. Due to the area that my students come from, they are not always able to play outside. I would like to expose them to other games that they can play outdoors but safely. Flag football offers a fun way to exercise without the students really noticing. My school may get traditional equipment such as basketballs, but any thing that is a little different, teachers must buy for themselves. The students eyes light up when a new game or piece of equipment can be used. I would like to fund a project that allows for large group activity that is safe but very fun. Flag football can be used by small kids as well as older, and even an occasional adult who walks by might join us.

My Project

In a young person's heart and mind there is nothing better than a highly competitive game of basketball. While that is true for some, there are other students who do not share the intense love for the game. For them something different but still physically active is more their style. That activity can be flag football. Our parents did it, we have done it, now it's time for our children to learn. Therefore, we need enough flag football equipment for a class of 30-40, including vests, footballs and a flag football set. The project will allow me to teach the student how to play football, how to score and social aspect of the game. Flag football can be playing by just about everyone. Any physical handicaps can be overcome by just a little adjustment in the game. So this game is for everyone. Flag football is a social game that friends and family can play. A fun afternoon at the reunion playing football can help to bring a family closer together. This project will teach the next generation what football is all about. And maybe, a football star might be born.

Please help us help the youth of tomorrow get and stay fit.
