UPFRONT with Current Events: Teens Read the Real World

My students need a class set (24 copies) of The New York Times Upfront magazine to stay informed on current events and practice non-fiction reading strategies.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I like when we read this stuff, Miss. This is REAL life; these are, like, facts we need to know." So said one of my students after our class finished reading an article about child soldiers from Scholastic's Upfront magazine. I was thrilled to finally engage my students with nonfiction reading.

I teach a course called "Reading and Writing Workshop" to 9th graders from a high-needs community.

Many students enter our school reading below grade level. Our school's curricula is quite rigorous, aimed at preparing our graduates for college. Therefore my fellow literacy teachers and I face a yearly goal of rapidly increasing our students' reading skills by several grade levels. However, the majority of my students enter 9th grade each year with a particular aversion to reading because of their comprehension struggles. Furthermore, the emphasis in our literacy department has traditionally been weighted towards reading fiction. We realized this past year that our students were suffering in other classes because their non-fiction reading skills were so low. One year, I happened to have a copy of Scholastic’s teen news magazine, Upfront, and started photocopying articles for my classes. The students were immediately drawn in by the bold captions and colorful photos.

My Project

One year, I happened to have a copy of Scholastic’s teen news magazine, Upfront, and started photocopying articles for my classes. The students were immediately drawn in by the bold captions and colorful photos. Our subsequent focus on reading strategies was enlivened because they were genuinely interested in what they were reading. I got my hands on a few other copies, and thus began our weekly non-fiction reading study. We started reading together as a class, and when the students became more comfortable with reading and digesting challenging words, they began to debate the topics in the articles. Upfront is an excellent resource for my literacy classroom. With a bi-weekly subscription, I can use these timely articles to hook my students into reading relevant non-fiction material and improving their comprehension and vocabulary skills. The articles correlate to major topics and themes that they care about, such as immigration, the environment, and international issues.

Your contribution to this proposal will help promote the act of reading as a powerful, enjoyable, and relevant activity for my students.

Non-fiction empowers young people, with factual knowledge and the capacity to think more critically about the world in which they live. Furthermore, developing non-fiction reading skills is essential for students' college-readiness. Your contribution will be helping me achieve my goal of nurturing a community of skilled, critical, and lifelong readers.
