Learning Math the Fun Way

My students need 12 hands-on math manipulatives and games in order to make learning new math concepts fun and engaging.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how you learned basic math skills? As a struggling math student myself, I have learned that Math can be fun if taught using manipulatives and hands on games. Albert Einstein, famous American Physicist states, “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas."

I teach Kindergarten in a low income area.

My school is considered Title 1. Approximately 98% of our students are free or reduced lunch. The vast majority of our students are English Language Learners with a high percentage being Migrant students, whose parents migrate in search of farm labor jobs. Although our students come from low income homes, they are happy and eager to learn new concepts. My students enjoy playing games and using hands-on manipulatives. Being an English Language Learner is a challenge for many of my students. They are all kinesthetic learners and they need to see it, hear it, play it and manipulate it in order to learn the concept. Allowing them to learn Math using different approaches and strategies makes learning Math less intimidating. I want to make learning fun and inviting because that is when learning takes place.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to learn Math the fun way. With hands-on games and manipulatives, students will feel excited about learning Math. Because my students are English Language Learners, the materials I am requesting will also develop the English language. Students will have an opportunity to hear a story read aloud while learning the Math concepts. The Math listening center will give my students tools to use in the classroom during Math center time. The stories are enjoyable and will promote learning Math the fun way. These Math stories also promote phonemic awareness and builds vocabulary development. Reading skills comprehension and phonics are another concept that the students will learn while listening to these Math stories. The "Count and Link" manipulatives will be an entertaining way to practice rote counting while visualizing quantities. The Fishing for Numbers is a fun way to "fish and match" numbered fish using activity mats.

For me, the word Math had a frightening connotation when I was a young student.

I don't want my students to feel overwhelmed when I introduce a new Math concept. Math is fun and exciting when taught using a variety of tools and games. Math is difficult for Kindergarten students to understand. Our classroom needs enticing Math centers that will engage their developing minds. These materials will give meaning to Math concepts that are difficult for young minds to grasp. Please help make Math fun.
