Seeing the World Through a New Lens

My students need 8 digital cameras to capture the world around them.

My Students

As teachers we try our best to see the world through our students' eyes by engaging in ongoing conversations with them and evaluating their written work. I would like to give my students the opportunity to show me their experiences firsthand by exposing them to photography.

My 2nd grade students come from a low-income neighborhood in New York, and the majority of them qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Accordingly, my students do not all have access to the learning materials at home needed to promote their academic development. I taught my students last year in 1st grade and will be looping up with them this coming year in 2nd grade. My students and I have therefore developed a close bond. At the end of 1st grade they were beginning to make very meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them. Therefore, I am excited to further enrich my students' learning this year by providing them with more hands-on learning opportunities.

My Project

With these cameras my students will be able to connect their learning to the world around them, therefore enriching their academic experience across all subject matters. Our writing curriculum entails a great deal of personal narrative work, in which students must draw inspiration from their own lives to bring a story to life on the pages of their journals. However, I have found that my students often lose interest in their stories and fall back on using unoriginal ideas about such things as trips to the park. Allowing my students to use cameras to explore their neighborhood and capture their own experiences will help them become more inspired writers. The cameras will also be used to enrich the 2nd grade curriculum across other areas, including math and science. My students will be better able to understand the ways in which math and science are a part of their everyday lives through picture hunts focused on the different concepts we study, such as geometry and plant life.

Teaching my incoming students last year gave me the wonderful opportunity to get to know their unique personalities.

They are an amazingly creative group of children who would benefit greatly from having the outlet of photography to express themselves and bring their learning to life. After our year together in 1st grade, my students have become a very close-knit and highly motivated group. I know that learning photography through this project will further ignite their passion for learning!
