My Students

To a young child the world is a magical place, a place filled with majesty and beauty. Appreciation and discovery comes when children learn to express that beauty through their artistic abilities. I intend to take my quaint but meager classroom, and transform it into an art studio for my students.

As a new teacher, I look forward to the opportunity that I have to work in my local neighborhood elementary school.

I will be teaching sixteen kindergartners, 12 boys and 4 girls, in an all- day program. Because of the extended day, I recognize that my students can more fully explore their artistic abilities if provided with the right kinds of tools. The students in my classroom come from very low-income families. Over 50% of my students are of Hispanic descent which introduces a new challenge as we must learn to work together to overcome the language barrier that exists between an English speaking teacher and Spanish speaking students. I will use centers such as this one to build relationships and create a safe environment where the children can practice the vocabulary they are learning in class and where they can converse with each other without the stress of having to perform on the spot when called upon by the teacher.

My Project

My students need different art supplies, including papers and paints, to explore their artistic talents and abilities. Research shows that children need multiple opportunities to express themselves throughout the day. More activities that engage my students in conversations will enhance their language acquisition. Talking about and explaining the process they use to create a work of art encourages such conversations. The art materials I have selected will allow my students to explore using different art mediums while working side by side with each other. I purposely have chosen an art easel that allows two students to paint at one time. That way they can converse with each other, explaining technique and color choice. To promote color identification I have chosen a variety of colors the children can paint with and explore. Working with yellow and blue, my students will discover that they can make green. At the first of the year the children will work on creating a self portrait. In my art center, I will have 3 different colors of skin paint for the children to represent themselves accurately.

As my art center becomes fully functional, I anticipate multiple opportunities each week for the children to discover and expand their creative abilities through sculpting, painting, and writing.

By donating to my project you will be guiding my students to the magic of art, expanding their vocabulary and language skills, and quite possibly fostering the next DA Vinci. Once established, the art center will be continuously replenished each year for my young artists to enjoy year after year.
