From Sea to Shining Sea

My students need this special rug with the states to assist in reading, learn geography, science and sing songs.

My Students

Are there any states in our country that you would like to visit or know more about? A map rug will capture the hearts and minds of my kindergrtners to see and know more.

The children in our California school come from all walks of life and economic backgrounds.

More than half of them are ESL or they are learning English as a second language. Our children, like all children, have great abilities and want to learn and grow. Last year when I taught first grade, several children were reading third grade material with 85% comprehension.

My Project

This map rug has all the names of 50 states in vibrant colors with mountain ranges, bodies of water and the North, South, East, West compass rose. Besides learning science, geography and reading, each child will be assigned a state or "place" to sit while I give instruction. There are fun state songs that the children will learn with the map. The rug will be placed in the correct North-South position in the room. I have some direction songs also to teach them.

Many of our children may never get to travel outside of California, yet this rug will teach them to dream big about visiting and knowing more about the greatest country in the world.
