Speak Up! (A Class Set of Novels)

My students need 55 copies of "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson.

My Students

In her novel "Speak," Laurie Halse Anderson writes, "When people don't express themselves, they die one piece at a time." My students know that in order to climb the mountain to college, they will have to stand up for what they believe in even when odds are stacked against them.

I teach 8th grade Language Arts (a combination of Reading and Writing) at a college prep charter school.

Approximately 90% of our students are low-income and 99% are African-American. They are extremely intelligent and capable, and they always covet opportunities to read great texts.

My Project

In order for my students to become excellent readers and writers who think critically about issues in the world today, we need high-quality novels that engage my students. "Speak" will certainly require my students to analyze and evaluate literary elements -- such as symbolism, themes, and suspense -- and will help them hone their narrative writing skills, but the reason I chose to center an academic unit around this novel goes far beyond these reasons. "Speak" is about a girl who enters high school as an outcast after she phoned the police during a summer party. What her tormenting classmates don't know is that she called the police because she was raped. Having fallen into a deep depression, can she find the courage to pull herself back up? In the end, this is a novel about perseverance and strength, a perfect message for my students to relate. That is why I am asking for 55 copies of "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to read an excellent novel as well as a forum in which they can discuss important issues experienced by people their age.

The books will allow my students to develop their reading and writing skills, as well as a life-long commitment to persevering and standing up for their beliefs.
