Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, "Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education." Our school's mission is based on this quote by Dr. King; the mission of our school is to develop the knowledge, skills and character traits necessary for our students to succeed in competitive high school and college AND to be a positive influence in the world. One of the most effective ways to accomplish both parts of this mission is by reading excellent literature that explores a social justice topic. I teach 8th grade Language Arts (a combination of Reading and Writing) at this college prep charter school. Approximately 90% of our students are low-income and 99% are African-American.
