A Quiet, Focused Place for Young Children to Learn to Read

My students need a guided reading table!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried to organize a group of five kindergartners to read a small book together while all of you are sitting on the floor of an busy hallway? Often, only the teacher ends up actually sitting! The kids roll, rock, spin, lie down and even do exercises!

My students are eager, energetic and young.

They are wiggly, fidgety and excitable. There are 25 of them in the same classroom! They are all learning to be bilingual and biliterate in our dual language program. They are learning together in a diverse group, 40% of whom have special needs. My students are expected to learn a LOT in one kindergarten year, and the hardest thing for them to learn at this young age is to read. Guided reading groups help immensely: a teacher takes 3-5 kids out to the hall with a set of books and is able to focus on the specific skills those students need. This way, kids who are advanced can be pushed to their potential, and kids who are struggling can get the individual help they need. Of course, the children need to sit somewhat still while reading with their teacher, and sitting on the floor just doesn't work! Rolling, lying down, and getting into each other's personal space makes it hard for even the teacher to focus on the lessons!

My Project

With one simple piece of furniture, my young jumping beans will be able to find calm and focus for a few minutes. The "half-moon table" has a spot for the teacher to sit in the center with the children around her. Eliminating the problems of sitting on the floor will make a huge difference, because we will be able to do a better job teaching the children to read!

A head start in reading will give them such a huge head start in their school careers!

It will also help their teachers maintain positive tones because they won't be scolding them about rolling around on the floor!
