My Students

Remember that book your High School English teacher made you read, that you HATED? My student's do, and I was that teacher. My students need new novels to read that will get them excited about literature and reading. My school doesn't offer the class set I am requesting; Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman

My students are fresh into high school and experiencing more freedom than they ever have before.

They attend a 5A public school in the great state of Texas. I teach English I, so most of my students are 14 or 15 and are struggling with trying to fit in with their new high school surroundings and find who they are as people and students. They are at an extremely important time in their life, where their actions can affect their next few years immensely. My goal is to help them grow, make good choices, and choose a path that will lead to their success throughout high school and beyond.

My Project

My students have expressed that the novels we read last year where dull and did not get them excited about reading. Hearing that broke my heart. I love reading and want more than anything to instill that love into my students. Therefore, I am requesting a class set of the novel Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman. Full Tilt is a marvelous novel that is about a boy who finds himself lost at a carnival where the rides come to life. Each carnival ride comes to life and reveals his inner most fears and problems. Each ride forces him to come to terms with the many struggles he faces and determine whether he will face them and survive or let them beat him down. With this novel my students will read a story that will challenge them to look into themselves and face their own problems. The novel will also provide a perfect opportunity to teach things such as, literary and character analysis, figurative language, and imaginative story telling. Most importantly, it will get them excited about reading!

Reading enhances student's imagination, vocabulary, and literacy.

These three things help students achieve great things throughout school and beyond. My goal by ordering these books is to have the student's experience a novel that they can relate to, interests them, and hopefully gets them interested in reading. I cannot wait for my students to experience this book and I hope to be able to give them their first experience this school year.
