Listening To Stories Makes Us Smile!

My students need 8 portable CD players with headphones to check out audiobooks on CD. Listening to text will help them grow into independent readers!

My Students

As a 1970s child, I had fun playing 45s to hear stories read aloud as I followed along in a paperback book. This helped me learn to read, and I'd like to give my students a similar experience. We need 8 CD players with headphones for them to check out, so they can listen and read along, too!

Our public school serves 390 students, who are near the middle as far as socio-economics are concerned.

The school library does have a budget, around $8-$9 per child, but I still need to concentrate on replacing old, out-of-date print materials as I've been doing for the past few years. Our parents are hard-workers, and they help us with "extras" as much as they can. Our kids are kind-hearted and respectful for the most part...and they're truly fun to teach! For this project, I'd like to target 3rd and 4th grade library patrons who are struggling to make the leap from "easy readers" to the more complex chapter books in our library media center. I've been scouring eBay to find CDs of books I think they'll be tempted to try! Scaffolding their attempts with the CDs will help them build vocabulary and comprehension skills as well as providing a model of fluency in reading aloud. I'm hoping this project will boost their confidence enough to help them succeed as independent readers.

My Project

Many times, my struggling readers check out very thick books that I suspect they cannot read on their own, and I wonder if there's anyone at home with time to read the books to them. It worries me. I'm looking for a way that those students can enjoy the books they're interested in reading. In an age of MP3 players, iPods and "Playaways", it may sound strange to want CD players for those students, but I have researched the cost for many weeks, and I believe this is the best option for now. I feel it's important to get audiobooks into my students' hands, and I can reach this goal for more of THESE students by using the less expensive CD players for now. (Besides, I'm finding that used CDs from sources like eBay, Craigslist and garage sales are fairly affordable for me.) Since we haven't had a technology option for listening in our media center previously, I'm thinking that my students will find the CD players a "novel way" to happily explore the more difficult texts!

I know as a young student, I loved listening to the stories read on those little records.

They fueled my imagination and made me yearn to hear more stories...until one day, I was reading books all by myself. I'm hoping that being exposed to this "new technology" in our library and having an abundance of audiobooks to choose from will spark a fresh desire for reading within my struggling students! Please wish us luck!
