My Students

"The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it." ~James Bryce. Novels allow students to work in small groups, complete projects, and embrace the love of reading. They build comprehension, fluency, and allow minds to explore.

My students are a fantastic diverse group of fifth graders.

There are a variety languages spoken but they are all inspiring and a joy to teach. Each one has a different background but they all have families struggling with the economy. I am the inclusion teacher in the school and that makes my classroom even more unique and special. Like most children they all have things they want, but I did a survey of what they think my classroom needs more of and every student said books. "We love reading and our reading groups are the coolest". "I love reading now but don't tell anyone". These are just a few of memorable words I have heard this year. As a class we have read over 125 million words and more than 400 books. I want to continue this trend for all of my students for years to come. We have made outstanding growth specifically fluency which grew by 65 percent I am proud to say all of my students are now reading at a fifth grade level.

My Project

I am requesting 8 sets of novels. Six of the sets are to complete a series that we currently have at our school. These books will be used for students to use in small groups with me. We have literature circles where each student has a specific job such as word wizard, summarizer, connector, visualizer, professor, and captain. The students read independently everyday for twenty minutes in class then journal. These books will be used to inspire discussions, and to teach content from the curriculum. The reading book the school has is great but children reading novels ignites a love of reading. I will also be able to have the students complete a variety of research assignments and also power point presentations. Gary Paulsen's adventures allow the students to connect to the wilderness and become engulfed in nature. Mildred Taylor And Jerry Spinelli's depiction of racial inequalities allows the students to gain a perspective of history and can alter their perceptions.

I find television to be very educating.

Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book. ~Groucho Marx As our society moves forward the love of reading cannot be lost. Too often video games, and televisions are the most common form of entertainment. I feel that as a teacher I must inspire children to continue to have adventures between the pages and explore their imagination. Novels are a key instrument to do this and this project will inspire books to live on.
