Techno-Readers: Using Technology to Improve Reading Fluency

My Students

Did you know that computers are a great way to fit instruction to each child? There are many programs available that will help students tackle specific skills, but my children need a non-networked computer to take advantage of those programs.

My children are one or more years below grade level in reading in fourth grade.

Many of them do not have computer access at home. Keeping their interest is a constant challenge, because so many materials on their levels are made for younger children. I do have some programs that are high interest, lower level, but I can't load them on our school network. One thing my kids all love is time on the computer, so I know they'd be really involved and attentive. It would make a world of difference to my struggling readers.

My Project

Having a computer that can run any software will enhance my students' enthusiasm for reading. If they can get on the computer once they've finished a task well, I know that they'll do their best on the task. On the computer, I can load games that will help students with fluency, decoding and comprehension skills that will also keep track of their progress. Better progress monitoring will help me to tailor the program to their needs so that they can become grade level readers.

As fourth graders, many opportunities have already by-passed my students because of their low reading abilities.

If they are going to make the most of the years of education that are left to them, my children need to succeed in reading before they go to 5th grade. Donations to this request will give my students another way that they can learn, so that they can have success in school and throughout their lives.
