This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourth and fifth graders are incredibly observant and bring so much to classroom discussions and trips. I need your help to encourage their exploration of their surroundings and individual voice by supplying them with art sketch books that allow them to both draw and write.

My students face a lot of challenges at home and in their neighborhood.

Our school is a Title 1 school which means that 99% of our students live below the poverty level and qualify for free lunch. The neighborhood is one of the poorest areas in New York, so the students have limited resources. Our school has a lot of committed teachers and we do our best to expose our students to the opportunities that the city offers and encourage them to be self motivated in life and education.

My Project

The sketch books that you are providing for the students are designed to encourage my students to express themselves through writing and drawing using scientific observation skills. My students learn about Leonardo da Vinci and how he used the power of observation and art to sketch inventions and ideas that came to exist hundreds of years after his life. They love his work and are inspired by the power of his sketches.

The smallest things inspire my students.

Having a sketch book to call their own gives them a place to retreat during class and provides them an opportunity to reflect about what they learn on trips, in the classroom, or express their own imagination with picture and words. Thank you in advance for helping my students. These sketch books will be such an amazing gift to their education and imagination.
