My Students

How often do you read or watch the news to expose yourself to the world, nation, and community? My students need this opportunity in our classroom every day. They do not always get this exposure, and Time For Kids is a wonderful tool for them to learn from. It is also an amazing source of non-fiction.

We have very diverse students at our Title 1 school and in our classroom.

I teach two Reading blocks throughout the day, and my students spend 2 hours in reading per day. My students are high poverty, and many of them do not have the money for everyday living, much less school supplies or even a newspaper or magazine at home. We have many students with different needs. We have a high population of ESOL learners who are learning a new language on top of everything else. My students have had experiences that I cannot imagine going through, yet they still show up to school each day and give it their all. Many of them are bright and willing to learn, while many others struggle each day to get through. My students do not have a lot of background knowledge about the world because they are not exposed to an educational environment except at school. I would love to be able to widen their reading and spark their interest in their own community and world around them.

My Project

Time for Kids is an amazingly useful tool used in my classroom. Students receive a magazine each week which I use within my reading instruction. We talk about, read, and discuss current events articles as well as debates, politics, scientific news, and sporting events. Students also work on a Reading Comprehension assignment throughout the week that helps them practice their reading skills each day during their independent reading time. The Time for Kids website provides many teacher tools and lesson plans that I may follow each week to extend learning. There is also a comprehension quiz that I may choose to use to assess my students on their reading comprehension. The text is on-level for my students, and students that are below grade level receive a lot of extra help and support. At this time, the below level learners become so engrossed in the news and articles that they are pushed to success. The articles are very high-interest and in the past my students have loved them.

This project is extremely important to myself and my students.

It is imperative that they are exposed to the everyday news around them so that they may have the knowledge needed to succeed. Without this additional reading instruction, my students will not be exposed to the news as much as they could be. The Time for Kids series is wonderful for exposure, learning, and practicing reading skills. I have been using it as a teaching tool for 3 years and don't know what I would do without it!
