Answers About Asperger's: We Need a Resource Library!

My students need a mini library of Asperger's resources so they can learn about themselves and become their own strongest advocates!

My Students

High school is really hard, there's no way around it. But for students with Asperger's syndrome, navigating the complex social structure involved in being a teenager can seem nearly impossible.

My students are in a full inclusion program at a large comprehensive urban high school.

They attend all general education classes with extra social and behavioral support. Being at such a huge high school is difficult for my students, who are often overwhelmed by the degree of interaction they are forced to have each day. This experience is necessary and beneficial for adulthood, but it points clearly at the challenges involved in coming of age with an Aspergian mind.

My Project

As individuals with Asperger's syndrome, my students have a huge capacity for learning and absorbing information. They enjoy learning and are extremely eager to learn about the one subject closest to home: themselves. For our resource library, I have chosen a variety of books about Asperger's. I have included books for teachers and about curriculum so that I may be as prepared as possible. I have included memoirs by and stories about people with Asperger's syndrome so that my students can know that they are not alone, that they are normal. Lastly, I have included books written by other teenagers with Asperger's, 'survival guides' as it were. I believe that the best allies and tools are those who have been there, those who have felt the pain and also the hope.

Our Asperger's resource library will give my students the chance to learn about themselves on their own and in their own way, not through a doctor or other unknown professional.

This knowledge will in turn give my students the strength to live up to their full potentials and to act as their own biggest advocates.
