My Students

"Can a ladybug be a boy?" Perhaps this question is the driving force to teach my students about insects- especially ladybugs.

My students are curious about science, especially bugs.

Sometimes at our public school, science takes a back seat. Incorporating science with literature and math is how I keep my students interested in learning about science. Using engaging, hands-on activities is how I keep them asking questions.

My Project

I'd like to take my students on a journey of the ladybug's life cycle. Most of my students only know a ladybug is red with black spots. They don't realize that a ladybug, like many other animals, go through a metamorphosis. By using a live animal kit and a magnifying glass, my students can observe up-close the changes the ladybugs make until it grows into the creature they are familiar with. In addition to learning about ladybugs, I'd like to familiarize them with other insects that share common traits as a ladybug. With the hands-on kit, students will differentiate insects from one another, classify them, and learn how insects protect themselves from predators. Using nonfiction literature will reinforce their reading skills. There's so much to learn from such a small bug!

Just by getting my students interested in and excited about insects may encourage them to be future entomologists.
