My Students

We have a central area to meet as a class group but it has vinyl tile flooring. It would be wonderful to have a space that is warm, colorful and inviting. It is much easier to learn when you are comfortable, not sitting on a hard, cold floor.

We live in the heart of an Indian Reservation in MT.

Over 60% of my school population receives free or reduced lunches and is of native decent. Many of my students come from homes that are economically challenged. My students have challenges at home but our school provides a safe place with many long term teachers who live in their community. The teachers here know the kids, know their parents, and know the situations so everyone can work together to create the best learning environments to suit our students.

My Project

We live in the heart of an Indian Reservation in MT where the average high temperature is 32 degrees in January and 82 degrees in July. It does get warm here but the temperature drops at night. We start our day on the floor. We discuss the calendar, read a story and set the tone to begin a day of learning. The space we have is a cold, hard, tile floor: not exactly where you'd want to sit down to start your day! I would like a warm, comfortable place for my students to come to gather with their classmates. This rug I've chosen has letters and numbers on it to inspire discussions and games. It will also provide a place for my students to lay down and read or play math games with each other. It will transform our "circle area" and give it a warmer more inviting feel.

If I can put a rug down in the circle area of our room, I will have a place where my students can comfortably sit, play and learn together on the floor of our classroom.

It will be used every morning when we come together to start our day. Students will use it to read books, play math games and work in groups. We will sit there to close our day as well by writing in our class journal of the things we learned everyday. It would be SO nice to not have to sit on the cold floor.
