It's In The Bag!

My students need 30 cloth bags and a variety of books to create these "literacy bags".

My Students

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all.” - Jacqueline Kennedy The literacy bag project would provide books, reading activities and a reflection journal for students. The focus is the home/school connection in reading and genre study.

My second grade class is composed of 28 avid learners that attend a public school in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

While the socioeconomic composition of the school is not a critical obstacle to the student learning, it is my experience that not all children have suitable reading books for their independent reading level at home. Additionally, the parental involvement in reading with their child has been limited to signing a weekly reading log. I would like to provide an opportunity for parents and students to share a fun literature based activity bag to explore and reflect on the selected books. The focus of connections: text to self; text to text; text to world would be an essential component of this project. I feel my students currently read out of obligation and not for pleasure with a vested interest in their reading experiences. I would like to promote higher order thinking and encourage development of self esteem/cognitive skills as described by Abraham Maslow.

My Project

The Literacy Bags would contain books on a specific topic (biographies, science, nature, social studies, fiction), hands-on activities for the students and a reflection journal to respond to "connection" prompts. The journal would be an opportunity for classmates to share their response to the books and activities. I would like these books to stimulate interest in my students across various genres of literature. The objective is to bring parents and students together in the reading of new books and how they "connect" to the text. I want my students to learn responsibility for the literacy bags, how to use books as a learning tool , how to make connections with their reading, and how to reflect on reading through written format.

As a second year teacher, I am confident that this activity bag project will stimulate my students' learning and improve their reading levels at the independent and instructional levels.

The focus of this literacy bag project is the parental involvement in reading with their child and the connections that can be made to literature. "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." — Emilie Buchwald
