My Students

"We have the write stuff!" This is a slogan that will adorn the walls of my classroom as my students-- the first class of students ever to take an AP Language and Composition course at our school-- work towards mastering argument and analysis at a college level.

As a third year teacher and Teach For America alum at an urban school, I have been repeatedly inspired by the stick-to-it-iveness that my students display.

A majority of my students come from impoverished backgrounds and are not strong readers or writers. My 2009-10 honors students were on an average 9.5 reading level their junior year. Because many of my students do not come from homes that are text-rich, they often struggle with comprehension and vocabulary that their peers in other socio-economic status categories simply would think nothing of. Regardless of their set-backs, my students are tenacious. To date, half of my AP Lang students have already completed the writing section of their summer work-- and the deadline is still two weeks away. Simply put, their enthusiasm is unprecedented at my school and demonstrates their desire in becoming excellent, skilled students. They are ready for this challenge.

My Project

Last year, my students had a 1.85 reading level growth in just one semester. This year, I want to increase that growth so that my students are able to compete with all students taking the AP exam in May. For many of my students, this is the first course they will take where the bulk of their class readings will be at home. This is where you come in: Electronic dictionaries will help my students bridge their vocabulary deficits as they work at home. The electronics are lightweight and portable, so my students will be able to easily carry them back and forth to school. They will also be able to get help immediately, otherwise, many of them would not have the tools they need until they return to school the next day. We will use them extensively in class as we only have 5 classroom dictionaries and no thesauruses. Finally, students would also be able to use these dictionaries as they work to improve their writing skills.

Your donation will literally help my students strengthen every facet of their AP Language and Composition skills.

They will become better readers, writers, and students because of your generosity. Your donation, whether $5 or $500 will help my students unlock texts and become successful AP students. Finally, the electronic dictionaries will give my students a sense of community and purpose and the understanding that other people are rooting for them.
