My Students

When you were little, what was your favorite book that your parents read aloud to you? Most of us grew up with parents that instilled the love of reading in us from an early age. For many of my students, however, this love was never nurtured.

The majority of my students come from single-parent households that are struggling to get by.

100% of our students are on free lunch, and many of them receive a backpack of food so they can make it through the weekend. For many of them, eviction is just a way of living.

My Project

I am requesting this button maker to start a new reading incentive program at our school. I believe that they should be rewarded for reaching their goals. With the button maker, students will work towards earning different "button badges" for achieving certain goals like reading books from a variety of genres or doing an author's study by reading several books by the same author. They will collect these buttons on a lanyard that they can be proud of! My hope is that as students wear the buttons on their lanyards, they will be inundated with compliments about their reading from the staff and students at school, motivating them to read even more!

My students need a reason to get excited about reading.

In the ideal world, students would be self-motivated and read for the pleasure of it. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world, and we compete daily with TV and video games. This reading incentive program gives the students a tangible reward, but the real reward will come from the compliments that the staff and students at my school will give them as they see how much they are achieving.
