"Do you remember what it was like when you were first learning to read? You may have thought you weren't very bright and that you would never learn. It doesn't encourage children when they struggle from the start. It isn't that they don't want to read, but that the books are too hard for them.

Many of the students I teach are at risk and come from low income families.

Their parents have a hard time putting food on the table and do not have the money to purchase books in their budget. It has fallen on the schools to provide these materials. Funding for our school is behind 1.5 million dollars and desperately needed reading programs are being cut. We are no longer provided money to buy materials we need in our classroom. I try to find books at yard sales and second hand stores, but have a difficult time finding the types of books my students need to be successful."

My Project

"These students need books with few words and repetitive text to help them become better readers. I am requesting books at three different levels so that there will be books available to help them become better readers throughout the year. If you have ever been lucky enough to work with a child as they read by themselves for the first time, it is an experience you will never forget. It is important for children to realize the importance and joy of reading at a young age. Your generous donation would help make this possible.
