My Students

The student desks in my classroom are from the 1960’s. They are big and cumbersome and hard to move. My students need smaller desks that can be rearranged to form diverse, dynamic groupings for cooperative learning and student interaction. They also need to have a desk with a storage compartment.

This is my second year of teaching and I have just moved from a second-grade to a first-grade classroom at a small school in a sparsely-populated, rural, agricultural area.

Our school is a low-income school located on an American Indian Reservation. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and some struggle with problems associated with poverty and today’s cultural climate. At our school, we take great pride in our varied cultures and feel that our students deserve the best that we can give them. Because we are a small school we can not always afford the latest and greatest equipment and supplies. Some of our classrooms have very old and outdated desks, furniture, and equipment.

My Project

Gone are the days when student desks were arranged in neat rows and students sat in the same spot for most of the school year and thank goodness! Research shows that students that work cooperatively and engage in peer interactions improve achievement and interpersonal relationships. In small groups students feel safe and can participate freely without fear or shyness. It allows children to share and participate without fear, become involved in their own learning, and learn from each other within their zone of proximal development. The desks in my classroom are outdated. We need desks that will create a transformational learning environment that can be easily arranged and rearranged to suit student needs. I would like twelve new desks that are smaller in size and have an open storage compartment in them. These desks will be easy to push together and will form a level work surface so that students can work together in small groups for a variety of learning activities.

This proposal will help create an adaptable learner-friendly environment for students.

It will stimulate cooperation and help students develop a sense of belonging as they learn to work with others. They will be able to change their environment to suit their needs and abilities as they grow and learn. Each student will have a space of their own to allow them to work independently. It will give them ownership and foster independence and responsibility as they care for their own materials.
