Exploring the Chemistry Behind Practical Jokes

My students need basic chemicals and safety goggles to start the new school year.

My Students

Do you remember wondering how practical joke products like slime, fake soda and foaming sugar - work? My student have not yet discovered products that capture their curiosity, but they have also not made and used these products on their friends.

My students live in a rural county near a major metropolitan area.

They are impoverished. Many of them are students in the high school that their parents graduated from. The high school once was a star in the state - now it struggles under budget constraints. The current Principal is supportive of the science teachers in our drive to return to the top as a science-focused institution.

My Project

'What does chemistry mean in the life of an average Joe?' - this is the question I open with. This is the question that the students themselves are allowed to find the answer to. By exploring the chemistry behind products that are fun, curiosity is re-awakened. These chemicals, safety goggles, and common kitchen products that they will supply themselves will allow them to create three products: Slime, Fake Soda, and Foaming Sugar. Through inquiry, they will learn the chemistry behind these 'fun' reactions.

In so many of our youths, curiosity and the drive to answer the all-important question of 'why does it do this?' has been replaced by video games, iPods and Google search.

For America to return to the top in the sciences, we must find a way to spark their curiosity again. Hands on, fun experiments that students can use at home are a wonderful way to do this. With your support, we can purchase enough materials for three experiments that we would not be able to have otherwise.
