Autism + Reading + Technology + Science = Happy Students!

My students need the Kindle and accessories to be successful.

My Students

De-stressing comes easily for most people - but not for some of my autistic students who experience anxiety and social communication problems. Listening to stories being read is a self-calming technique that WORKS for my students and helps them be successful for the rest of the school day.

I teach high functioning autistic students in a Chapter 1, low income, elementary school ranging from K-5th grades housing 450+ students.

The students are in regular education classes and receive support from my Autism Spectrum Disorders class in the areas of social skills and academics. I work closely with regular education teachers and classes to provide support in all school settings. Autistic students are very literal, thus making socialization with others very difficult. Getting along with others is a life long skill needed by all age groups. Autistic students experience difficulties with understanding the social demands of others. These students work hard during social skills instruction to be able to manage their disability. However, it causes a lot of anxiety and overwhelming feelings. One intervention which truly helps them de-stress and be successful is listening to books/stories being read. This intervention is not possible when I am teaching small groups.

My Project

The Kindle, a simple, light weight piece of technology is the key to assisting my autistic students become less anxious and remain engaged in learning. Having the opportunity to use the Kindle will allow a successful intervention to be used since I cannot stop to read while I am teaching other small groups. With the Kindle, my students will be able to de-stress and read with a new, techno method while I continue to teach. With the 600,000 free book downloads, I will be able to provide numerous opportunities for these students to be able to read everything from the classics (Tom Sawyer) to the Tree House Series to science to historical genres. Another main desire is to provide a device for my autistic students to be able to read in a quiet place when the the environment around them has become overwhelming.

By providing the Kindle, a small piece of technology for my autistic students, your help will allow autistic students to further learn and be successful in school, thus helping them become productive citizens.

A small gift which will last a long time and will help numerous autistic students.
