Developing Social Skills of Children with Autism

My students need an interactive game system to help promote their socialization with regular education students and develop appropriate social skill.

My Students

My students face a daily challenge of navigating social situations that do not come naturally to them. Interactive games are part of social gatherings that children gravitate to. Singing karaoke with friends and playing in a "band" are fun activities that anyone can enjoy.

My students are part of a special education program for children with autism.

This disability is mostly characterized as a communication disorder. Having this challenge from birth, these children have not had the same opportunities as other typically developing children to learn and interact in social situations and develop friendships with other children. They also lack the communication skills necessary to navigate a social situation. Our school has started a special social skills program that invites students from the general education school to meet and interact with our students on a weekly basis. I teach our students how to behave and talk in social situations, and I teach the general education students how to interact with students with autism. Both groups of children benefit from the opportunity to interact with each other and expand their awareness and tolerance of social differences.

My Project

This project will provide my students with the opportunity to have "normal" social interactions with their general education peers. Playing interactive games with a group allows for collaborative and social musical entertainment that bonds individuals to a common experience. My students will be able to develop social relationships and strengthen their language skills with fun games and friendly banter.

This project is about having the right tools to create just the right environment to foster social interaction for children that don't have the resources or skills to do it themselves.

I want these children to overcome their autistic limitations and be able to communicate with their peers, build a relationship and partake in a friendship that may last them a lifetime.
