Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever driven through a neighborhood that reminds you of your grandparents: hardworking, worn around the edges, but still full of life and beauty? This description characterizes the community around my school. Students here come from families that are proud but not wealthy.

My students attend an urban, Title 1 high school.

In practical terms, this means that on paper they come from working-class households and that most of them qualify for free or reduced lunches because of the very low family incomes. But these students defy stereotypes! Representing a vast array of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they work so hard that our school receives an excelling designation and is mentioned in the US News & World Report as a school of merit. Students here don't assume that opportunities will be easy pickings: they work hard to create their own opportunities, taking the example of their parents who often work two or three jobs to support their families. Families will apply for district exemptions to attend our school, in part due to the extraordinary efforts of teachers, administration, and staff to develop a school that is free from gangs and drugs, and that demands excellence no matter what challenges students must face.

My Project

By using composition notebooks, students can watch their growth as writers blossom throughout the year. The historian and novelist James Michener once said, "I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter." Students here do not always begin by believing in their writing abilities, but they learn that good writing is a skill, that practice makes better, and that effort will finally lead to excellence. Pages cannot be torn out of composition books, so students have the chance to learn from mistakes and to refer easily to past assignments and ideas. Moreover, a composition book is a great place to keep notes on writing mini-lessons; I like to have students journal in the first half and keep notes in the second half, using sticky tabs to mark the end of units of study. One semester's composition book might contain everything from provocative entries about war in Beowulf, to the abuse of power in Macbeth, to the finer points of parallel structure and the use of appositives.

These kids choose Converse sneakers over Nike's newest triple-digit offering; they work after school to save for college; they approach life with optimism but without a sense of entitlement.

Because of financial challenges, they cannot afford to by a lot of extras beyond the basic binder and pencils. As an experienced instructor I know that sometimes the tools we use make a difference, and this is one of those times. Please help these students journal their way to academic success!
