Dimming the Lights for Engaging Academic Moments

My students need an LCD projector to reduce the number of copies we make.

My Students

To copy, or not to copy, that is the question. With the lack of funding creating a desire for basic classroom supplies like paper and ink, it would be great to minimize the need for those items. An LCD projector would be an awesome aid.

The students at our school are a diverse group.

Although they are predominately African-Americans from some of the worst neighborhoods in Baltimore City, they host a wide variety of interests and talents. Fortunately, it has been their desire to succeed academically, as well as within these special interest sectors like sports and music, that have kept them from dwelling on what they don't have in the classroom.

My Project

Having a projector in the classroom full-time would be a serious change for my students. They are so accustomed to having limited access to this type of technology, because there are only three within our department. That means about 15 teachers are sharing three projectors. It gets extremely hard choosing what documents are worth copying and which ones you can do without. Having a projector would eliminate some of that stress, as those deemed not so important could simply be projected and explained. In the past those assignments were simply explained. Not only that, but the students may feel a sense of pride in their school, instead of thinking they are receiving an inferior education, because of what they do not have in the classroom.

This project is important to me because it would mean that more time can be spent on what matters...teaching.

At present, students often receive handouts that they cannot write on, in an effort to conserve paper. Often this means deciding what assignments are worthy of being copied and which are not. Personally, I think it is crucial for the students to see everything that I am presenting them with.
