My Students

We are all unique! I once read a quote, "Just because a duck can't climb, doesn't mean he should stop swimming to learn." Teaching has evolved from a "one size fits all" approach to finding where students learn best and meeting them there. We are learn and show that learning in different ways.

I am a teacher at an Arts magnet school in South Carolina.

My students come from families often faced with difficult situations. They come to school most days knowing it is a safe environment in which they are free to be themselves and express themselves. I take this approach with academics as well. I take the first few weeks of school to really get to know them. Not just if they have brothers and sister and what their favorite foods are, but how and what they like to learn. Do they like writing assignments? Do they like drawing? Would they rather act out or sing something?

My Project

In my classroom, we have an open and accepting community. I begin by explaining it's important to be unique. They will see different activities and assignment on a regular basis. Some they will choose, some I will choose. This means they will be involved in choosing how they learn a lot of topics. There is a lot of collaboration between students and students, and myself. This kind of learning and atmosphere really allows individuals to shine and show a greater depth of understanding. My students need materials for differentiated group work, including chart paper, markers, folders, index cards, and post-it notes.

Just like the quote about the duck, why should the duck learn how to climb?

Will it help him? If he is good at swimming and flying, isn't it OK to become even better at that? I try to focus on my students strengths not their weaknesses. Too often in school students are told what they need to improve on instead of what they can excel at. Students need to know the importance of their uniqueness.
